The accident happened in the village of Moisei, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
The bus was carrying 49 Polish citizens; it veered off the road and hit a building, killing the driver and injuring seven passengers, according to officials.
Łukasz Jasina, the spokesman for Poland’s foreign ministry, told reporters that the bus belonged to the Tourist Track company from the southern Polish city of Kraków.
“Unfortunately, one person, the coach driver, died and the seven people who suffered non-life-threatening injuries have been taken to hospitals in Romania,” Jasina said.
They remained in contact with the tour operator and with a Polish consul, who was on his way from Bucharest, according to Jasina.
Jasina said the tour operator would bring the tourists back to Poland, adding that little was known about the exact circumstances of the accident.
“We are counting on information gathered by Romanian police,” he told the media.
The passengers who escaped unhurt have been accommodated in a local guest house. Meanwhile, traffic police were investigating the crash, according to the PAP news agency.
