She was only outperformed by one male runner, Yoshihiko Ishikawa of Japan, who completed the race in 21 hours, 33 minutes, and 1 second.
Now in its 42nd year, the Badwater Ultramarathon pits up to 100 of the world’s toughest athletes against one another and the elements, according to organisers.
Braving scorching temperatures and altitudes of up to 2,548 metres, runners, triathletes, adventure racers and mountaineers from 21 countries and 30 American states this week faced off in the challenging nonstop run from Death Valley to Mt. Whitney, California.
Poland’s Bereznowska in 2017 claimed the 24-hour world championship and won the 246-kilometre Spartathlon race in Greece.
She also holds the 48-hour world record of 401 km, according to the wp.pl news website.
