A team of Polish and Canadian climbers have brought down Italy’s Francesco Cassardo to a base camp on the Gasherbrum VII peak in northern Pakistan, where he was picked up by a helicopter, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported on Monday.

Polish climber Denis Urubko and Canadian climber Don Bowie managed to reach Cassardo on Sunday after his partner Cala Cimenti called for help.

Cassardo had fallen from over 500 metres and suffered severe injuries while attempting to descend the mountain on Saturday, IAR reported.

The Polish-Canadian rescue team brought the injured Italian down to base camp a thousand metres below the treacherous peak in the Karakoram mountain range of the Himalayas using an improvised stretcher.
