In his first ATP final, Hurkacz defeated France’s Benoit Paire 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

The Frenchman is ranked 30th in the world. Thanks to this victory, Hurkacz, ranked 41st, will likely advance to the 35th spot in the ATP ranking, the highest in his career, the Onet website reported.

Hurkacz’s win marks the first such victory for a Polish tennis player in a singles tournament of this rank since 1982.

Thirty-seven years ago, Pole Wojciech Fibak won the now-defunct WTC Chicago tournament, the predecessor of ATP.

On Monday, the Pole kicks off the US Open Grand Slam in New York with a clash against France’s Jeremy Chardy.

Meanwhile, Poland's Magda Linette defeated Camila Giorgi 5-7, 7-5, 6-4 and scored the first WTA win for Poland since 2016.

Linette is 80th and her rival 58th in the WTA ranking.
