Rising Polish star Hubert Hurkacz beat world no. 4 Dominic Thiem on Wednesday, while his teammate Kacper Żuk defeated Dennis Novak.

It was the Polish team’s first win in the cup this year. Earlier in the tournament Poland were defeated by Argentina and Croatia, losing their chance to advance to the quarterfinals.

Twenty-two-year-old Hurkacz, who is now world no. 37, once again proved able to take on top tennis players in his 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7/5) win against Thiem in Sydney.

"It's definitely one of the most important successes of my career … the hard work turned out to be productive," Hurkacz told Poland's leading sports newspaper, Przegląd Sportowy.
