Meanwhile, Poland’s Dobek finished third in the men's 800m, with a time of 1:45.39, at the National Stadium in Tokyo, narrowly behind Kenya's winner Emmanuel Korir and second-placed Ferguson Rotich.

Earlier on Wednesday, Agnieszka Skrzypulec and Jolanta Ogar won a silver medal for Poland in the women's 470 sailing class at the Tokyo Olympics.

Polish President Andrzej Duda congratulated the medal winners in a series of Twitter posts, saying it was "another beautiful day for Poland in Tokyo."

The Polish prime minister's office tweeted: "It's a fantastic day for Polish sport! Congratulations to our athletes."

Poland's Nowicki had stood on the Olympic podium before, having secured bronze at the 2016 Games in Rio. He has also won three bronze medals at world championships and is the 2018 European champion.

The four-time world champion Fajdek, meanwhile, qualified for the Olympic final for the first time. He failed to do so both at London 2012 and Rio 2016.

Poland's Dobek in March claimed 800m gold at the European Athletics Indoor Championships on home soil.

Polish athletes have so far earned 10 medals, three gold, three silver and four bronze, at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, which run in Japan until Sunday.
