Tennis: Poland’s Świątek begins US Open campaign

Świątek will be seeking to win her second Grand Slam title this year, after winning the French Open in June.

The first-round match at New York's Louis Armstrong Stadium begins at 5 p.m. CET. 

Also on Tuesday, fellow Pole Magda Linette, the world number 73, will face the 22nd seed, Czech Republic’s Karolina Pliskova, who reached the US Open final in 2016.

Meanwhile, in the men’s tournament, Poland’s world number 10 Hubert Hurkacz begins his US Open run against Germany’s Oscar Otte.

Majchrzak, Fręch crash out

Two Polish players contested their first-round matches on Monday. Both Kamil Majchrzak and Magdalena Fręch went out of the US Open at the first hurdle. 

Majchrzak lost in four sets to Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo, 1:6, 4:6, 7:6 (7:3), 1:6. Fręch meanwhile, was beaten in straight sets, 2:6, 3:6, by Canada’s Rebecca Marino.
