The Poland national football team captain scored three goals, as his side, FC Barcelona, overpowered Czechia’s Viktoria Plzen, 5-1.

After the match, Lewandowski said he dedicated the hat-trick to his wife Anna on her 34th birthday, adding that her presence at the stadium “meant a lot.”

Two goals from outside the box and a header took Lewandowski’s Champions League tally to 89 goals, outstripping Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema and falling behind only Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Polish striker’s superb form will be put to a test next week when his team will square up against his former club, Bayern Munich, in the second round of Group C matches in the Champions League.

Meanwhile, a Polish midfield artist, Piotr Zieliński, notched two goals for Napoli in a clash against Liverpool, who were labelled as favourites for their Champions League visit to Naples.

Early in the first half, Zieliński converted a penalty after Liverpool’s Milner blocked the Pole’s shot with a hand.

In the 31st minute he assisted on Anguissa’s goal, as Napoli doubled their lead, flooring the Premier League outfit.

Shortly after the break, Zieliński bagged his second goal, which in the end secured a 4-1 victory for the Italian side.

On Wednesday, Napoli will face Scotland’s Rangers in the next round of games in the Champions League Group A.
