Tennis: Poland’s Świątek reaches US Open final

Poland’s world No. 1 Iga Świątek has advanced into the final of the women’s singles competition at the US Open Grand Slam tennis tournament in New York.

The 21-year-old Pole defeated the sixth seed Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus 3:6, 6:1, 6:4 in their semi-final match at Flushing Meadows on Thursday, news outlets reported.

Świątek came back from a set down, also overcoming a 2-4 deficit in the third set to secure victory after 2 hours and 11 minutes of play.

Poland’s world No. 1 will now face the fifth seed, Ons Jabeur of Tunisia, in her first-ever US Open final on Saturday, September 10.  

It will be Świątek’s third career Grand Slam final, her second of the year and the first outside the red clay of Roland Garros, news outlets reported.

Świątek has so far claimed six WTA titles in 2022, including the French Open, winning a total of 56 matches.
