The Polish team suffered a 3-1 (22-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-20) defeat after the final match, held at the Spodek arena in the Polish southern city of Katowice.

After an incredible comeback from 17-21 to winning 25-22 in the first set, the Polish side lacked strength to bludgeon their opponents and lost the three subsequent sets.

Three Polish players, Bartosz Kurek, Kamil Semeniuk, and Mateusz Bieniek, have made it to the tournament’s Dream Team with Italy’s setter Simone Giannelli named the Most Valuable Player of the championship.

By way of their Sunday victory, Italy have regained the world title after a long 24 years.

In the semi-final, Poland narrowly defeated Brazil, who later claimed bronze after they overpowered Slovenia 3-1 (25-18, 25-18, 22-25, 25-18) earlier on Sunday.

The 2022 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championships have been jointly hosted by Poland and Slovenia from 26 August to 11 September.

Originally, the tournament was due to be held in 10 cities across Russia, but the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) stripped Russia of its right to host the event following the Kremlin's invasion of Ukraine on 24 February, 2022.
