Mateusz Morawiecki met with the players at his office in Warsaw, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

The PM told the silver-medalists: “I would like to thank you on behalf of all the Poles for those wonderful emotions, for the fighting spirit.”

Noting that Poland had won the two previous world championship tournaments, Morawiecki said: “I don’t know of any other team sport where the Polish side is so dominant. Gold, gold, silver. Fantastic performance, the hardest route to the final.”

The PM again thanked the Polish team on behalf of the nation “for the fighting spirit, for the sweat, for the effort, for professionalism and for the outstanding class you showed.”

“I’m immensely proud and I congratulate our magnificent volleyball players, the head coach [Nikola Grbiċ] and the captain [Bartosz Kurek],” Morawiecki said.

Poland take silver

Poland came close to completing a hat-trick of World Championship victories as they reached the final of the 2022 tournament.

Urged on by the home crowd in the southern city of Katowice, the Poles went out with all guns blazing in Sunday’s title showdown, but Italy proved too strong on the day, winning 3:1 to become world champions.

Poland finished runners-up, taking the silver medal.

Meanwhile, Brazil claimed the bronze medal after beating Slovenia in the third-place play-off.

The 2022 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championships were jointly hosted by Poland and Slovenia from August 26 to September 11.

Originally, the tournament was due to be held in 10 cities across Russia, but the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) stripped Russia of its right to host the event following Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

Poland defeated Brazil in the previous two world championship finals to win titles in 2018 and 2014.

Poland's national volleyball team last year won the bronze at the 2021 Men's European Volleyball Championship.
