The Poland captain was presented with the accolade at a ceremony in Theatre du Chatelet in Paris on Monday, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

Lewandowski voted best striker after scoring 57 goals in 2021/22

The award went to Lewandowski for the second year running. This time, he was honoured in recognition of his goalscoring exploits for Poland and German champions Bayern Munich in the 2021/22 season, during which he found the net 57 times in 56 matches, the goal.com website noted.

The 34-year-old Pole thanked his teammates at the national team, Bayern and his current club Barcelona for helping him score goals.

He said he was “happy, satisfied and proud” of having won the Gerd Müller Trophy, adding that the 1970s German goal machine “has been a big inspiration for me,” the PAP news agency reported.

Lewandowski has continued his prolific form since leaving Bayern for Catalan giants Barcelona this summer, scoring 14 goals in 13 games for Xavi’s side, goal.com reported.

France’s Benzema wins 2022 Ballon d’Or for best footballer of the year

Meanwhile, the main award of the night, the Ballon d’Or for best footballer of the year, went to France’s Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema.

Senegalese striker Sadio Mane, who recently swapped Liverpool for Bayern Munich, was second, ahead of Manchester City's Belgian playmaker Kevin de Bruyne.

Poland’s Lewandowski, FIFA's world player of the year for 2020 and 2021, finished fourth.

The Ballon d'Or, awarded by the French weekly magazine France Football, is voted for by 100 journalists from around the world.

The prize was granted to the best footballer of the year, based on performance throughout the 2021-22 season, news outlets reported.
