"Unfortunately, I have tested positive for Covid-19,” the 27-year-old defender said in a social media post.

He added that he was “feeling good.”

“Despite taking the necessary precautions recently, I didn’t manage to avoid becoming infected with the virus,” Bereszyński said in an Instagram message on Saturday.

He appealed to fans to “be responsible and stay at home if possible.”

Bereszyński has 22 caps with the Polish national team.

Six other Sampdoria players have also tested positive for the coronavirus, Poland’s PAP news agency reported.

It noted that another Poland international, Karol Linetty, also plays for the Italian outfit, which is based in the country’s northern city of Genoa.

Italy on Sunday reported thousands of new cases and several hundred new deaths from the coronavirus outbreak, remaining the most affected country in Europe.

Meanwhile, star striker Robert Lewandowski has appealed to Poles via social media to follow the recommendations of authorities and stay home to prevent the spread of the coronavirus epidemic.
