Grychtołówna was born in Rybnik 95 years ago to the day. She is an honorary citizen of the city.
In April, Grychtołówna performed a 70-minute recital in Warsaw, demonstrating "supreme artistic skills and great physical form, given her advanced age," according to critics.
This year marks the 70th anniversary of her public debut.
In 1955, Grychtołówna won Seventh Prize at the International Chopin Competition in Warsaw. A year later, she received Third Prize at the Schumann Competition in Berlin. In the late 1950s, she also won prizes at piano competitions in Bolzano and Rio de Janeiro.
Foreign tours took her across Europe, the Americas, Australia, Japan, China and Thailand.
From 1986 to 2007, she taught piano performance at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany.
She was a jury member at some of the world's most prestigious piano competitions, including the International Chopin Competition in Warsaw.
