Agnieszka Holland's ‘Green Border’ nominated for 2023 European Film Awards

“The Green Border,” the new movie by Polish director Agnieszka Holland, has been nominated for the 2023 European Film Awards in the best film, director and screenwriter categories.

The nominations for the 2023 European Film Awards were announced on the competition’s official website on Tuesday.

Holland’s immigration drama The Green Border will vie for the Best European Film prize with Jonathan Glazer’s UK-Poland-US co-production The Zone of Interest, Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall, Matteo Garrone’s IO Capitano, and Fallen Leaves by Aki Kaurismäki, Polish state news agency PAP reported.  

These five filmmakers will also battle it out for the Best European Director prize.

Meanwhile, Maciej Pisuk, Gabriela Łazarkiewicz-Sieczko and Holland are among the nominees for the Best European Screenwriter award, for the screenplay for The Green Border

Apolonia, Apolonia, a Denmark-Poland co-production directed by Lea Glob, has been nominated for the Best European Documentary prize, the PAP news agency reported.

The 2023 European Film Awards will be handed out at a ceremony in Berlin on Saturday, December 9.

The European Film Awards are the continent’s foremost movie accolades, regarded as Europe’s answer to the Oscars, the PAP news agency reported.

They are granted by more than 3,000 film professionals making up the European Film Academy.

The European Film Awards were launched in 1988, when the Best European Film prize went to Polish director Krzysztof Kieślowski’s A Short Film About Killing.

In recent years, Loving Vincent, a Poland-UK co-production by Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman, won the 2017 European Film Award for Best Animated Feature Film, while Anna Zamecka’s Communion won the 2017 European Film Award in the Best Documentary category.

Paweł Pawlikowski’s Oscar-nominated Cold War scooped six European Film Awards in 2018-2019, for Best Film, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Screenwriter, Best Editor and People’s Choice, according to the European Film Academy.
