Poland’s Katowice to host int’l conductors’ competition

Fifty up-and-coming conductors from 23 countries will vie for awards at the 11th International Conductors’ Competition, which is set to open in Katowice, southern Poland, on Friday, November 17.

They were selected by an international panel of judges from among 256 applicants representing 43 countries on the basis of video recordings of their performances.

The competition’s international jury is made up of prominent Polish and foreign conductors and performers, including Lawrence Foster, Patrick Fournillier, Christopher Warren-Green, Yaroslav Shemet, Andriy Yurkevych, Marcin Nałęcz-Niesiołowski, Michał Nesterowicz, Dmitry Sitkovetsky, and Daniel Stabrawa.

The prizewinners will be announced on November 24.

The winner will receive EUR 20,000 in prize money and a host of invitations to work with Polish and foreign orchestras.

Founded in 1979, and named after the prominent Polish conductor and composer Grzegorz Fitelberg, who died 70 years ago, the event is one of the world’s most prestigious competitions for conductors. It is a member of the Geneva-based International Federation of Music Competitions.
