The "Leader of Polish Business” Gala is an annual event held since 1991 to honour Polish companies and entrepreneurs "for their outstanding results in the year gone by."

Award-winning businesses offer innovative products and services to customers and thus contribute to the development of Poland's economy, the Business Centre Club says.

Nominations are submitted throughout the year and later a special jury comprised of BCC members selects the candidates for the Golden, Diamond and Platinum statuettes.

Along with recognizing companies and entrepreneurs, the awards ceremony also honours politicians and businesspeople who have contributed to the development and promotion of Poland.

This year the special honours went to the US ambassador to Poland, Mark Brzezinski, and Poland's Justice Minister and Prosecutor-General Adam Bodnar.

Brzezinski was honoured for his merits in strengthening the development of Poland's entrepreneurship and efforts to deepen transatlantic ties.

Collecting the award at the weekend, Brzezinski said he was greatly honoured. He added that he was confident in Poland's future.

The US ambassador also pointed out that this year Poland will be celebrating the 25th anniversary of NATO accession.

Meanwhile, Bodnar was praised for his efforts to help maintain the rule of law and build civil society in Poland in his former role as ombudsman.

He said at the ceremony that he was honoured to be among the award winners. He told the gathering that he was glad that his work as ombudsman was appreciated and that it was "a tough team fight for the rule of law" in the country.

He vowed to continue working to "ensure the stability and clarity of the rule of law" in Poland.

Previous winners of the special BCC awards include many outstanding figures from outside the business community, such as Margaret Thatcher, Angela Merkel, George Bush, Madeleine Albright, Jacques Chirac, Lech Wałęsa and Tony Blair
