The US Senate voted 86-11 on Thursday to approve the measure, which now goes to President Joe Biden to be signed into law, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

Biden welcomed the vote in a tweet. "I applaud Congress for passing the security package I requested and for sending a clear bipartisan message to the world that the U.S. stands with Ukraine," he said.

"This package will allow us to send even more weapons and ammunition to Ukraine as they defend their democracy and freedom," Biden added.

Biden initially proposed USD 33 billion in military, economic and humanitarian assistance to help Ukraine fend off Vladimir Putin’s invasion, but Congress proposed billions more for food aid and military equipment, broadcaster CNN has reported.

The United States on Thursday announced an additional USD 100 million worth of security assistance for Ukraine.

In a previous move to help Ukraine fight Russia, Biden earlier this month signed the Ukraine Democracy Defense Lend-Lease Act of 2022, a law that aims to streamline the process of supplying the country with military equipment.

The Lend-Lease Act of 2022 is intended to enable the United States to more efficiently send weapons and other supplies to war-torn Ukraine as well as NATO allies affected by Putin's invasion of Ukraine, according to officials.
