Polish Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau said on Monday that Poland wanted the EU to continue to sanction “those Russian companies that are working directly for the benefit of the aggression against Ukraine.”

Speaking after a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels, Rau added that sanctions should also cover “dual-use goods, especially chemical and pharmaceutical products,” as well as advanced technology, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

Poland's top diplomat stated that restrictive measures should be made "more and more precise."

Poland is also demanding restrictions on Russian gas, oil transported via pipelines, more Russian banks, propaganda outlets, the IT industry and the means of road and sea transport, the PAP news agency reported, citing sources in Brussels.

In addition, the government in Warsaw is pushing for the EU to be more ambitious in sanctioning individuals, officials said.

These proposals were put forward by Poland’s ambassador to the EU, Andrzej Sadoś, at a meeting in Brussels on Monday, reporters were told.

At the meeting, envoys from EU countries discussed the bloc’s proposed new sanctions package against Russia, unveiled by the European Commission last Friday, according to officials.

New EU sanctions package

The European Commission on Friday proposed an import ban on Russian gold as part of a new package of EU sanctions on Moscow over its war in Ukraine.

The EU executive also announced measures to tighten existing sanctions against the Kremlin and reinforce controls on dual-use and advanced technology exports.

Meanwhile, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, on Monday called on the bloc to continue to put restrictions on Russia.

He said: “EU sanctions work and the Russian economy is severely affected.”

Tuesday is day 146 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
