Andrzej Duda and China’s Xi Jinping spoke for an hour at the request of Beijing, officials told reporters.

According to the Polish president’s office, Duda "outlined the Polish stance on the Russian aggression against Ukraine."

He noted "the negative impact of Russia’s war on the security of the region, and on Poland’s trade cooperation with other partners, including China."

For his part, Xi Jinping expressed China’s readiness to work with Poland on finding peaceful ways to solve the conflict, reporters were told.

Both presidents stressed "the importance of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries, including Ukraine," Duda's office said.

The Polish head of state pointed out "Russia’s attempts to create a global food crisis" and China’s potential to actively prevent such an outcome, according to officials.

Bilateral relations

Both Duda and Xi Jinping underlined that Polish-Chinese relations “are of high quality, strong and characterised by a friendly atmosphere of mutual respect,” aides said.

Last month, Poland and China held a session of the Polish-Chinese Intergovernmental Committee.

Other topics broached during Friday’s meeting included economic cooperation and increasing flight services between Poland and China as the pandemic eases, according to officials.

Afterwards, the Polish president took to Twitter, writing: “I am very pleased with the conversation I’ve had with the Chinese leader Xi Jinping. We talked about Ukraine and its territorial integrity. I spoke about the need to combat the food crisis caused by Russia.”

Duda added: “We discussed Polish-Chinese relations, the development of which is an important part of Polish policy.”

Friday was day 156 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
