UPDATE: US announces $1.1 bn in additional security assistance for Ukraine

The United States on Wednesday announced a new USD 1.1 billion arms package for Ukraine's defence against Russia, news agencies reported.

According to a statement by the US Department of Defense, the new security assistance package includes 18 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) and associated ammunition; 150 Armored High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWVs); 150 tactical vehicles to tow weapons; and 40 trucks and 80 trailers to transport heavy equipment.

Washington will also provide Kyiv with various types of counter drone systems and radar systems, in addition to "tactical secure communications systems, surveillance systems, and optics; explosive ordnance disposal equipment; body armor and other field equipment," as well as funding for training, maintenance, and sustainment, the Pentagon said.

The United States has now committed more than USD 16.2 billion in security assistance to Ukraine since the beginning of Russia’s invasion on February 24, according to officials.
