Russia carried out the attack using the Shahed unmanned aerial vehicles in the early hours of Thursday, the Reuters news agency reported.

Ukraine’s air defence systems shot down 34 out of the 44 drones fired by Russia, according to officials.

“Fighter aircraft, anti-aircraft missile units and mobile fire groups were engaged to repel the attack," the Ukrainian military said on the Telegram social messaging app.

Meanwhile, Odessa regional governor Oleh Kiper said his province had been the main target of the Russian attack, but the strike caused no casualties, according to Reuters.

Kiper said on Telegram: “Our air defence forces did an excellent job. No hits or destruction. There were no casualties.”

The governor added: “There were only a few small fires on dry grass as a result of the falling wreckage of the downed Shahed."

In July, Russia left the United Nations-backed Black Sea Grain Initiative that allowed Ukraine to ship its grain abroad, the Reuters news agency noted.

Since then, Moscow has conducted  a series of strikes on Ukraine’s infrastructure and ports on the Black Sea and the Danube, notably Odesa and Izmail, which are vital for agriculture exports, according to news outlets.

Thursday is day 582 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, launching the largest military campaign in Europe since World War II.
