Maciej Bednarski had been fighting on the front lines since 2022. He was a subunit commander with the rank of junior sergeant. The Pole's primary deployment was in the Donbas region, but recently he was actively involved in the defence of Avdiivka, where the heaviest fighting is taking place at current time.

"Bednarski died two weeks after a road accident in which he was injured. Surgery was performed, but unfortunately doctors were unable to save his life. The exact circumstances of the tragically fatal accident were not disclosed - but after the event occurred, the Pole had received a temporary pass allowing him to rest from frontline combat" - Poland's TVP World informed.

Present in Ukraine since March 2022, Baca-Pogorzelska expressed her gratitude to the doctors at the military hospital in Kharkiv for their dedicated efforts to save Bednarski, who was kept in a coma until a transfer to Kyiv for further treatment could be arranged.

Maciej Bednarski enlisted as soon as Ukraine allowed Poles to join not only the international battalion, but also the regular army. - "This is also our war" - he emphasised. - "When the photos from Bucha and Irpien arrived, I decided to join the Ukrainian army. I didn't want it to happen again" - he said, while interviewed by Poland's Radio Zet in October.

In the 1990s Bednarski was a soldier in Poland - and until recently he worked in the Polish port of Gdynia.

Sunday is day 620 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
