Ukraine repels Russian drone strike on Kyiv, 10 other regions: officials

Ukraine has pushed back a massive Russian air attack, downing 30 out of 31 drones launched against Kyiv and 10 other provinces, according to Ukrainian authorities.

Russia fired a wave of Shahed unmanned aerial vehicles against Ukraine overnight into Saturday, the RBC-Ukraine news agency reported.

Ukraine's air defences brought down 30 out of 31 drones launched by Russia, the General Staff in Kyiv said. 

Loud explosions were recorded in the Ukrainian capital just after midnight on Saturday, The Kyiv Indpendent website reported.

Officials said the air defence was in action and warned residents to stay in bomb shelters, according to news outlets.

Kyiv's mlitary authorities later said all drones fired by Russia against the city had been shot down.

Saturday's drone barrage was the sixth aerial assault on Kyiv this month, The Kyiv Independent reported.

A missile attack overnight into Wednesday injured 53 people, according to officials.

Russia on Saturday also fired UAVs against 10 other regions of Ukraine, including Kherson, Poltava and Cherkasy, news outlets reported.

Russian shelling of Kherson province injured three people, according to the RBC-Ukraine news agency.

Saturday's air attack came amid reports that Russia was launching a winter strikes campaign against Ukraine.

Saturday is day 661 of Russia's war on Ukraine.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, launching the largest military campaign in Europe since World War II.
