Russia targeted Kherson on Tuesday afternoon, the Ukrainska Pravda website reported.

As part of the attack, Russian forces struck the city's railway station, setting fire to an evacuation train, according to officials.

The strike killed a Ukrainian police officer, and a further two officers were taken to hospital with shrapnel wounds, the RBC-Ukraine news agency reported.

Two civilians also sustained shrapnel injuries and received medical assistance, according to officials.

Some 140 civilians were at the railway station during the attack, waiting for the evacuation train to depart, said Ukraine's Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko.

The Kherson train passengers were later transported by bus to the southern city of Mykolaiv, from where they would travel by train to Kyiv, according to the state Ukrainian Railways company.

In all, Russia on Tuesday shelled Kherson for several hours with various weapons, also hitting other infrastructure facilities as well as residential buildings, Ukrainska Pravda reported.

Kherson was captured by Russian troops in the early stages of the Kremlin's February 2022 invasion of Ukraine, before being retaken by Ukrainian forces in November 2022.

The city is under constant attack from Russian troops fortified in new positions on the east bank of the Dnipro river, the Reuters news agency reported.

Wednesday is day 672 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, launching the largest military campaign in Europe since World War II.
