NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg was chairing the meeting at the alliance's headquarters in the Belgian capital.

Before the main part of the gathering, Kosiniak-Kamysz discussed regional security with his Lithuanian counterpart Arvydas Anušauskas, the Polish defence ministry said in a post on X.

NATO defence ministers meeting in Brussels were expected to address defence spending, ammunition production and support for Ukraine amid Russia's ongoing invasion, according to an announcement.

Other topics up for discussion included "deterrence and defense, regional plans, command structures, the defense industry, as well as defense spending and exercises taking place in Europe," according to the Polish defence ministry.

Ukraine aid is 'an investment in our own security': NATO chief

Ahead of the gathering, NATO's Stoltenberg told reporters that allied support for Ukraine was making "a real difference."

He added: “With our help, the brave Ukrainians have retaken half of the territory that Russia seized, opened a corridor in the Black Sea and are inflicting heavy losses on Russian forces.”

The NATO chief welcomed a recent decision by the European Union on a major new package of aid and said he counted on the US Congress to follow suit soon because “this is not charity; this is an investment in our own security.”

On Wednesday, the US-led Ukraine Defence Contact Group convened to address the situation on the ground and Ukraine’s urgent needs, according to the alliance's website.

On Thursday, NATO defence ministers were expected to discuss how to further strengthen NATO’s deterrence and defence, followed by a meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Council with the participation of Ukrainian Defence Minister Rustem Umerov.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, starting the largest armed conflict in Europe since World War II.

Thursday is day 722 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
