The assault on the capital triggered multiple fires and damaged residential buildings, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said.
"Four people died in the capital. Ten were injured. Five were hospitalized, and the rest received help on site," he wrote on Telegram.
Regional authorities later updated the number of those injured to 16.
In Lviv, a series of explosions followed an air raid alert.
"We are working with all emergency services to determine what exactly happened and where,” said Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi.
Oreshnik ballistic missile used to hit Lviv?
According to Ukraine’s air force, the attack on Lviv may have been launched from the Kapustin Yar military range in Russia’s Astrakhan region, where the Oreshnik hypersonic ballistic missile system is believed to be stationed.
Sadovyi noted that while the missile used reached a speed of 13,000 kph, it is still unclear whether an Oreshnik was responsible.
Lviv regional governor Maksym Kozytsky confirmed that a key critical infrastructure site was damaged in the region.
An air raid alert was issued across Ukraine overnight after Russia launched a MiG-31K fighter jet, capable of carrying the Kinzhal hypersonic missile, reports said.
In an address on Thursday evening, President Volodymyr Zelensky had warned of the possibility of a large-scale overnight attack by Russia.
