Daniel Stenzel, the spokesperson for Gdańsk's mayor, Aleksandra Dulkiewicz, said at a press conference that local authorities have been providing social care to the elderly man for years, funded by the city budget.
The man has been under the care of the Municipal Family Assistance Center since 2007, and since 2018, he has been receiving professional care services, which have evolved over time based on his needs.
In February 2024, due to the inability to ensure appropriate living conditions and the lack of family support, the Municipal Family Assistance Center requested a court order to place him in a nursing home, which was granted. The annual cost of care for the elderly person in the nursing home is approximately 92,000 PLN (21,509.14 EUR or 24,415.97 USD).
Nawrocki's apartment deal with elderly man sparks controversy
On Monday, Polish news outlet Onet.pl reported that in 2017, Jerzy Ż., the previous owner of the Gdańsk apartment, transferred the property to Nawrocki and his wife in exchange for care and support under a lifetime agreement.
Onet revealed that Nawrocki – contrary to his claims – is no longer providing care to Mr. Ż., who is now living in a state-run nursing home in Gdańsk.
On Tuesday, during a conversation with Bogdan Romanowski, Nawrocki reached out to Mr. Jerzy Ż., from whom he took over the apartment, asking him to contact him. "I think someone is preventing him from getting in touch with me. I'm still here, loyally fulfilling our agreement, even though I don't have to by law, and I'm ready to help him," said the PiS candidate in the presidential elections.
Nawrocki 'shamelessly lying': social worker
Earlier, in a comment for Onet.pl, Anna Kanigowska, a social worker and caregiver for 80-year-old "Mr. Jerzy," said that in her opinion, "Nawrocki did nothing for Mr. Jerzy except take over his apartment. And on top of that, he's shamelessly lying about paying his bills."
"It was terrible. I remember how Mr. Jerzy sat in his apartment in the dark, freezing, wearing a coat. He didn't have money to pay for electricity, and everything in the apartment was electric, including the heating. To prevent him from freezing in the winter, I paid for the electricity out of my own pocket," the woman added.
