On Tuesday, Interior Ministry spokesperson Jacek Dobrzyński said that Poland’s Internal Security Agency (ABW) issued a security clearance in 2021 to Karol Nawrocki - the current presidential candidate for the right-wing Law and Justice (PiS) party, who now heads the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN) and previously led the Museum of the Second World War - despite concerns about how he financed the purchase of an apartment from a man identified as Jerzy Ż.
In a follow-up statement on Wednesday, Dobrzyński clarified that earlier investigations not related to the apartment were being misused to blur the central issue.
He said that the clearance was granted by then-ABW chief Krzysztof Wacławek, “despite a serious and negative recommendation from the officer who analyzed the case files.” Wacławek is now an advisor to President Andrzej Duda.
PM Tusk accuses PiS of ignoring ABW warning over Nawrocki
Prime Minister Donald Tusk commented on the matter via social media, writing: “The ABW officer in Gdańsk who investigated Nawrocki issued a negative opinion in 2021, but the PiS leadership of the agency ignored it for reasons unknown. That same ABW chief now advises President Duda,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter).
