“A possible fraud may have taken place,” said Przemysław Rosati, president of the Polish Bar Council, commenting on a scandal involving a property acquired by PiS presidential candidate Karol Nawrocki from an elderly man, as first reported by Onet.pl.

Speaking to Polish news outlet Onet.pl, Przemysław Rosati also criticised the public disclosure of details from the will of an 80-year-old man named Jerzy during a press conference by former education minister Przemysław Czarnek, a member of the right-wing populist Law and Justice (PiS) party.

“Revealing this information violates the constitutional right to privacy,” Rosati said, adding that it infringes on Jerzy’s personal rights and those of others named in the will as having been disinherited.

At a press conference on Tuesday, PiS lawmaker Przemysław Czarnek presented a notarial deed showing that Nawrocki and his wife bought a 28-square-metre (301 sq ft) studio apartment in the northern city of Gdańsk from Jerzy for 120,000 zł ($32,000; £24,000).

The agreement stated that payment would be made in instalments over 14 years, although Nawrocki has reportedly declined to provide bank transfer records to verify this.

Right-wing PiS presidential candidate summoned to explain disputed property deal

Questions about Karol Nawrocki’s second apartment surfaced during a presidential debate hosted by Super Express, when the PiS candidate claimed he owned only one property in response to a question from left-wing Left party candidate Magdalena Biejat.

Two days later, the news outlet Onet.pl reported that Nawrocki owned two apartments – one of which was reportedly acquired from an elderly man as part of a care arrangement – and later disclosed a third property co-owned with his sister.

Amid growing scrutiny, Poland’s parliamentary justice committee has summoned Nawrocki to appear for a hearing on Friday. He is expected to present documents related to the contested apartment in Gdańsk.

Szymon Hołownia, Speaker of the Sejm (Poland’s lower house of Parliament) and a presidential candidate, said on social media that Nawrocki had been invited to testify before the committee on 9 May 2025 to explain the circumstances surrounding the property acquisition.
