Minister of Defence Andris Sprūds (Progressives) said that the acquisition of the self-propelled howitzer system would be a significant step in strengthening the capacity of the National Armed Forces.

"This will not only expand our indirect fire capabilities, but also promote closer cooperation with Sweden, ensuring joint training and exchange of experience. This will be a long-term investment in our security and defence capabilities," Sprūds said.

As previously reported, in June last year, the Ministry of Defence signed a letter of intent with Sweden, which included a commitment to conclude an intergovernmental agreement for the purchase of 18 "Archer" wheeled artillery systems for the National Armed Forces.

It is planned that on Friday, January 16th, during a bilateral meeting with Swedish Defense Minister Päl Jönsson, Sprūds will sign a defense cooperation roadmap that will strengthen the two countries' shared security interests in the Baltic region. Along with the signing of the roadmap, Latvia and Sweden will, among other things, agree on long-term cooperation, which will include joint training and the deployment of Swedish "Archer" systems in Latvia from 2026.

While awaiting delivery of the artillery system, the two countries will form a joint "Archer" 6x6 unit so that the Latvian armed forces can conduct joint exercises and develop their indirect fire skills even before their own dedicated guns arrive.

No price tag has been named for the deal, but as recently reported by LSM, the 2026 defence budget does include 159 million euros' worth of  "indirect fire support" including mortars, missiles and howitzers.
