Firefighters in Poland said on Saturday they had been called out more than 170 times over the last 24 hours after heavy rain caused flooding, especially in the south of the country.

The calls "mainly involved flooding of basements, buildings or cars … The services are currently operating at the highest level," said Adam Kryla, a fire brigade spokesman from the southern Polish city of Katowice.

Fire crews were also summoned to secure buildings, reinforce flood defences as well as pump out flooded streets.

The Government Center for Security (RCB) on Saturday sent out text messages alerting people in nine Polish provinces of intense rainfall and possible storms causing a risk of local flooding and power outages over the weekend.
