“Very sad and unexpected news. Professor Jan Szyszko died today before noon,” Poland’s President Andrzej Duda said in a tweet.

“An academic and a politician, but above all, a good and kind human being, a lover of nature, whom I greatly liked and respected,” Duda added.

Szyszko was the country’s environment minister in 1997–1999, 2005–2007, and most recently under the country’s ruling conservative Law and Justice party in 2015–2018.

The last two years of his period in office were marked by a row between Warsaw and Brussels over logging in Poland’s primeval Białowieża forest, state-run news agency PAP reported.
