Nowoczesna (Modern) was formed by Ryszard Petru in 2015. In the same year Lubnauer was elected to Parliament, and in 2017 replaced Petru as Nowoczesna's leader.

In the general election this autumn, Nowoczesna was part of the Civic Coalition electoral alliance alongside major opposition party Civic Platform.

Speaking at the convention, Katarzyna Lubnauer said that she took responsibility for the election results, adding that she had always believed politics should be done with gravity and that was what she had always tried to do.

"We have survived the most difficult time, we have a representation in local government and in Parliament, but we lost the European and general elections as a party and as a coalition" she said.

Nowoczesna elected Adam Szłapka to lead the party following Lubnauer's resignation.
