Jarosław Kaczyński was speaking on Thursday after attending a mass in Starachowice to mark seven years since the death of his mother, Jadwiga Kaczyńska.

He emphasized the role his mother's generation had played in shaping a free Poland.

"We, Poles, deserve our own state, an independent, sovereign, democratic state, which is an organization of a community of Poles,” he said.

“Today, in these beautiful yet difficult times, we have to remember this. This is something that connects the life of this generation, most of which has already passed away, with today's times, with everything we do today to make Poland better and ensure that Poland is sovereign and independent, so that this new attack on our sovereignty and independence is repelled," Kaczyński told listeners.

He added: "A sovereign, free Poland, in the EU, in a community of free states and free nations - this is the future that we must fight for and that we will be successful in fighting for. I am deeply convinced of this."
