Mass events called off in parts of Poland as coronavirus hits

The mayor of the western city of Zielona Góra, where Poland’s first coronavirus patient is in hospital, has called off all mass events for two weeks.

They include a music concert, a dance championship and an educational fair. The mayor appealed for calm and said that there was no need to close schools.

The governor of the southern Lower Silesian province has suspended all hospital visits in the region.

A wide range of cultural, social and sports events have been cancelled.

These include a guest performance by a visiting Italian company at a theatre in the southern city of Katowice this week, and the women’s ice hockey world championships in the same town during which the Polish squad was to take on teams from China, South Korea and Italy.

A major international badminton tournament in Kraków, southern Poland, scheduled for the end of the month has also been called off.

Poland’s health minister announced on Wednesday that the first case of coronavirus infection has been confirmed in this country.
