The researchers from the Jagiellonian University in Kraków, southern Poland, believe their findings are a promising first step towards producing a drug to fight the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.

"The substance developed by us is innovative in global terms," virologist Krzysztof Pyrć was cited as saying on Friday by Poland’s PAP news agency.

The agency added that the substance developed by the Polish scientists is a chemical compound called HTCC.

The researchers need a commercial or institutional partner to carry out tests, PAP reported.

A total of 3,149 people have tested positive for the COVID-19 disease in Poland, with 59 deaths from the coronavirus so far, officials said on Friday morning.
