Speaking to broadcaster TVP Info, Łukasz Szumowski said that a vaccine would be the only effective means of stopping the coronavirus epidemic.

"We are waiting for it," he added.

Szumowski told the Polish state television broadcaster that the virus epidemic was likely to last “a year-and-a-half or two years” depending on how people interact and behave.

"As long as there is no vaccine, this state of affairs will probably persist,” he said on Wednesday evening.

“There is no way of telling how the epidemic will play out,” he added.

A senior Polish official said on Wednesday that the government was planning to cautiously relax a swathe of restrictions imposed on daily life amid a coronavirus outbreak.

Szumowski said on Tuesday that the government would start “slowly unfreezing the economy” from April 19.

A total of 7,771 people have tested positive for the COVID-19 disease in Poland, with 292 deaths from the coronavirus so far, officials announced on Thursday morning.
