Poles hang out national colours

Poles are being urged to hang out the national red-and-white colours on Saturday, the country's Flag Day.

People across the country are being encouraged to display a flag in front of their home, on a balcony or in their workplace, take a photo and share it on social media along with the hashtag #mojaflaga (#myflag).

"It doesn't have to be a big flag," said Jan Kowalski, head of a cultural institution called the Office of the Niepodległa (Independent) Programme.

"You can sew it yourself or make it out of paper. What’s important is that we show in these difficult times we are able to unite and show our solidarity and patriotism, and a bit of optimism.”

The programme is a government initiative aiming to foster patriotism and a sense of community among Poles.

Poland's Flag Day is a relatively new tradition - it was established in 2004.
