He was speaking at a press conference attended by Poland’s health and interior ministers to sum up the government’s efforts in combating the COVID-19 disease, which has killed 1,081 people in Poland.
Morawiecki said the pandemic was a crisis that "politicians, doctors, the health service, people, have not seen for decades."
He stressed that Poland was one of the first countries to close borders and introduce sanitary controls, while a few days after its first case of the coronavirus was confirmed, a ban on mass gatherings was introduced.
In Western Europe and in the world’s richest countries, he added, such gatherings “led to great tragedies, to apocalyptic scenes, to the deaths of tens of thousands of people.”
The first COVID-19 infection was confirmed by Polish authorities on March 4, while the country's first coronavirus fatality was announced on March 12.
A total of 24,271 people have tested positive for the COVID-19 disease in Poland, with 1,081 deaths from the coronavirus so far, officials said on Tuesday morning.
