Under the existing law, crimes committed by functionaries of the communist apparatus can be prosecuted only until August 1, 2020.

Poland’s ruling Law and Justice party has submitted a bill to repeal this provision.

It wants the new law to enter into force on July 31.

Earlier this month, Polish President Andrzej Duda said that "communist crimes should be prosecuted in the same way as crimes of genocide."
