Torrential rain takes its toll on roads in south-eastern Poland

Torrential rain in the Podkarpackie region of south-eastern Poland has caused damage to roads estimated at some PLN 100 million (USD 25m, EUR 22m), an official said on Monday.

Houses, outbuildings, schools and wells were also flooded after heavy rainfall on Friday. About 400 people had to be evacuated, state news agency PAP reported.

Władysław Ortyl, the governor of the province, said help would be given to the areas which were most heavily hit.

He also promised assistance, including loans on preferential terms, for local businesses which suffered damage during the flooding.
