Meanwhile, Poland ranks seventh in terms of the number of deaths from COVID-19 per 100,000 inhabitants, according to new data.

Figures from the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) for 31 countries (EU members plus Britain, Switzerland, Norway and Iceland) show that a total of 119 SARS-CoV-2 infections per 100,000 residents were detected in Poland in the last two weeks.

The highest daily numbers of infections per 100,000 were recorded in the Czech Republic (581), Belgium (469), the Netherlands (412), France (307), Britain (283), Spain (293) and Iceland (273).

Fewer cases than Poland’s 119 were recorded in Italy (87), Sweden (73), Lithuania (64), Latvia (58), and Germany (55).

The highest COVID-19 mortality rate was reported in the Czech Republic, where there were 4.41 deaths per 100,000 residents. Romania reported 3.83 deaths, Spain 3.01, Hungary 2.64, Malta 2.03, and Belgium 2.0.

The coefficient for Poland is 1.63.

Lower mortality rates than in Poland were reported in France (1.55), Portugal (1.43), Britain (1.42), the Netherlands (1.38), Italy (0.61), Slovakia (0.29), Germany (0.23) and Sweden (0.16). In Iceland, no one has died from the coronavirus in the last 14 days.

The ECDC said on its website that the indicators were calculated from data collected from various sources and depended on the local testing strategy, the efficiency of laboratories and the effectiveness of surveillance systems, according to PAP.

On Thursday, Poland reported a record daily rise in coronavirus infections for the second consecutive day, confirming 8,099 new cases, the most since the pandemic hit the country in early March.

A total of 149,903 people have tested positive for the coronavirus in Poland since the pandemic began, and 3,308 have died in connection with the COVID-19 respiratory disease so far, officials announced.
