The Senate is also set to consider a proposed new “Good Samaritan” rule, under which doctors, nurses and paramedics caring for coronavirus patients will not be punished if they make a mistake, unless it was the result of gross negligence.

The Speaker of the upper house, Tomasz Grodzki, has said he hopes the Senate will complete debating the new rules on Monday.

The measures received the green light from the lower house on Thursday.

Poland on Sunday reported 11,742 new coronavirus infections and 87 additional deaths, bringing its total number of cases to 253,688 and fatalities to 4,438.

Health Minister Adam Niedzielski warned at the end of last week that new infections in the country could surge to 25,000 a day if social distancing and other measures were not widely respected.
