Dr. Artur Zaczyński, who is coordinating work to set up the hospital at the National Stadium in Warsaw, said: "Currently, the facility is being equipped with medical supplies and drugs, and staff training is underway."

Amid an escalating outbreak, Poland last month announced plans to set up a network of temporary hospitals to treat coronavirus patients, including at the National Stadium, a prime venue for sports and entertainment events next to the Vistula river in the capital.

The prime minister's chief of staff, Michał Dworczyk, said last week that the hospital at the National Stadium would ultimately have 1,200 beds, including 100 intensive care beds.

Six large Polish state-controlled companies have been ordered to set up temporary hospitals around the country with more than 3,000 extra beds for COVID-19 patients.

Poland reported 15,578 new coronavirus infections on Monday and 92 more deaths. The figures indicated a slowdown in the daily rate of new cases.
