Polish deputy PM in hospital with coronavirus

Polish Deputy Prime Minister Jarosław Gowin is being treated in hospital after contracting the coronavirus, an official said on Tuesday.

Gowin is in a "stable" condition and is "in constant contact with his colleagues," said Katarzyna Zawada, a spokeswoman for the ministry of development, labour and technology.

Gowin is Poland's development minister as well as a deputy premier.

He announced on Sunday that he was infected with COVID-19, writing on Twitter: "It got me too in the end."

He added at the time: "Let those who can get vaccinated! We'll overcome this filthy thing soon!"

Poland on Tuesday reported 14,396 new coronavirus infections and 372 more deaths, bringing its total number of cases during the pandemic to 1,931,921 and fatalities to 47,578.

Public health officials have warned that the daily number of new COVID-19 infections in the country is rising amid the third wave of the epidemic.
