Poland is set to receive 4.5 million doses of a COVID-19 vaccine developed by US drugmaker Johnson & Johnson in the second quarter of the year, Health Minister Adam Niedzielski has said.

Niedzielski tweeted on Friday that Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose vaccine ensures 85 percent protection against a severe course of the disease from the 14th day after inoculation and 100 percent protection against hospitalization and death from the 28th day.

Earlier this month, Niedzielski told a news conference that his country had ordered 16 million doses of the Johnson & Johnson shot and that the first shipments were expected to arrive next month.

The shot, which has been approved by the European Union last week, is the first single-dose COVID-19 vaccine and the fourth to be endorsed for use in the EU after those from Pfizer BioNTechModerna and AstraZeneca-Oxford University.

The Johnson & Johnson vaccine has been found to be 67 percent effective two weeks after inoculation and is recommended for people aged over 18, the European Medicines Agency has said.

A total of 4,893,320 COVID-19 vaccine shots have been administered in Poland so far, including 149,828 over the last 24 hours, officials announced on Friday.
