Poland reports 1,679 new coronavirus cases, 191 more deaths

Poland on Friday reported 1,679 new coronavirus infections and 191 more deaths, bringing the country's total number of cases during the pandemic to 2,863,031 and fatalities to 72,691.

Of the new cases confirmed on Friday, 221 were in the central region of Mazowieckie, which includes the national capital Warsaw.

Meanwhile, 200 new infections were reported in the densely populated southern coal-mining region of Silesia.

The western province of Wielkopolskie, which is home to the major city of Poznań, had the third-highest number of new infections confirmed by officials on Friday, at 191.

The latest deaths in Poland’s coronavirus outbreak are 135 people with pre-existing medical conditions and 56 who died directly because of COVID-19, the Polish health ministry said.

On Thursday, Poland confirmed 250 deaths and 2,086 new coronavirus infections nationwide, compared with 329 deaths and 2,344 fresh cases a day earlier.

On April 8the country reported its highest daily toll of 954 deaths related to the coronavirus.

On April 1, the Polish health ministry confirmed 35,251 new single-day cases, the most since the pandemic hit the country more than a year ago.

Poland's first case of coronavirus infection was reported on March 4, 2020.

9,200 in hospitals, 96,793 quarantined

The health ministry announced on Friday morning that 9,200 COVID-19 patients were in hospitals nationwide, 1,239 of them on ventilators, with a further 96,793 people quarantined for possible coronavirus exposure.

Meanwhile, 2,618,031 people have now recovered from COVID-19 throughout the country, including 4,011 over the last 24 hours, the health ministry also said.
