Poland reports 12,032 new coronavirus cases, 505 more deaths

Poland on Saturday reported 12,032 new coronavirus infections and 505 more deaths related to COVID-19, bringing the country's total number of cases during the pandemic to 4,120,248 and fatalities to 97,559.

Of the new cases confirmed on Fridaythe most—1,718—were in the central Mazowieckie province, which includes the national capital Warsaw.

The latest deaths in Poland's coronavirus outbreak are 326 people with pre-existing medical conditions and 179 others who died directly because of COVID-19, the health ministry said.

On April 8the country reported its highest daily toll of 954 deaths related to the coronavirus.

On April 1, the Polish health ministry confirmed 35,251 new single-day cases, the most since the pandemic hit the country early last year.

Poland's first case of coronavirus infection was reported on March 4, 2020.

19,408 in hospitals

The Polish health ministry announced on Friday morning that 19,408 COVID-19 patients were in hospitals nationwide, 1,897 of them on ventilators.

Meanwhile, 3,645,692 people have now recovered from COVID-19 throughout the country, the health ministry also said.

Public health authorities in the middle of this month confirmed Poland's first case of the omicron COVID-19 variant. Since then 24 more omicron cases have been detected, according to Deputy Health Minister Waldemar Kraska.

A range of new coronavirus restrictions took effect in the country earlier this month as it seeks to fend off the new, highly contagious strain of the coronavirus.
