A heatwave sweeping through Spain, with temperatures in some areas rising above 40 degrees Celsius, has started flowing into Poland, the country’s Met Office has said.
Institute of Meteorology and Water Management officials have issued second-level heat warnings for western provinces as the mercury is expected to soar on Sunday to 36-37 degrees Celsius in the shade.
Sunday is expected to be the hottest day this year so far. Forecasts also mention weather hazards for Poland in the following days such as storms and hailstorms.
Experts said that people looking after children and the elderly, especially those with chronic illnesses, should take particular care of their charges on Sunday.
They advised Poles that anyone venturing outside should cover their head, protect their eyes with sunglasses, use sun cream and avoid drinking alcohol.
Respite from the heatwave is expected to come on Monday, with cooling storms likely in many locations.
In Spain, where the heatwave began a week ago, forest fires burned nearly 9,000 hectares of land in the northwest Sierra de la Culebra region on Friday. Regional authorities said some 200 people were forced to evacuate their homes.
